It all comes together

When you set out and follow your heart the entire universe conspires to help you.

Since deciding on Sunday that I would step out of my comfort zone and give a public talk amazing things have fallen into place.  On Monday I found two topics that I would like to talk on, so that solved the subject matter concern.  Then after putting the idea out there to check if anyone would be interested I have had overwhelmingly positive feedback.  On Tuesday afternoon Tania designed a booking form with a little blurb about the two topics I would talk on.

By Wednesday I had managed to find a date that worked for me;  24th June.

The only thing left was to find a place where I could host about 20 people on the date I had chosen.

Today (Thursday) at 2pm my cellphone rang. The Finance Manager from River Hotels Group called as he had heard about the talk I was planning and asked me a few questions about it, and he then proceeded to offer me a venue free of charge at the Halyards Hotel and Spa. Between Michael, Onika and the Halyards Hotel they have very generously made this event become a reality for me.

The only thing left to do is to deliver a talk that will add value to the lives of the people that come listen to me.

I am amazed at the ease and flow that has taken place in putting this all together. It seemed like a rather big deal for me on Sunday night as I was falling asleep. I had made a commitment and published that very same commitment on a public platform. There was a part of me that trusted everything would be just fine and all would work out, however there was that constant little voice of doubt that kept asking what I was thinking. The voice of fear was finding every excuse not to go through with the talk. The problem was I had already committed and I knew there was no turning back. So I surrendered myself to the fact that whatever may happen, I would stand up and have my say, even if it meant I had to work hard to make it happen. The entire process has had a surreal feeling. Almost as if I have been floating along a current in the sea which is leading me exactly where I have to be.  I am not saying that public speaking will become my vocation, but it is a challenge I have set for myself and everything has fallen into place to make it happen.

Even the topics for the talks just seemed to present themselves. Both talks (there will be two as I believe you have to try everything twice) have almost been waiting in the hallway ready to appear when the time was right. I know this all sounds pretty strange and rather like something you would read on a blog somewhere and not a genuine story, but this honestly is one of those “it happened to me” events.

So what can I take out of this so far?

  1. When you decide to do something that scares you it will happen really quickly and still be scary.
  2. When people believe in you, you feel more secure in yourself.
  3. You can choose to listen to the voice of reason or the voice of fear.
  4. The voice you choose to listen to will manifest in your experience of the situation.
  5. People are generally kind, caring and willing to help one reach a goal.
  6. Stepping out of one’s comfort zone is exciting and challenging.
  7. Setting a context for oneself enables one to achieve that which you may have thought unattainable.
  8. The worst thing that could possibly happen is that I choke and deliver a poor performance on the night. That is not something that will kill me so I get another chance at trying again or trying something different.

All that is now left is to get out there and do it. Face this challenge and set the next one, build momentum and keep on stretching myself just beyond the comfort zone.

It is easier than one would imagine. All you need to do is embark on something that scares you and before you know if you will more than likely be facing it head on as it comes charging towards you.

Right then is the precise time to smile wryly and believe in yourself because you are about to step up and overcome your fear and embark on the wonderful journey of life.

That is amazing! I am so excited for you, and this motivates me to do something- I don’t know what yet, but something. Also, funny thing- I read your name as Dylan in Portal Fred. Port Alfred- too bad I’m not close by or I would definitely come hear your talks!
